In 1769 the Maori people used to have New Zealand all to themself, until they had war with the British. Lots of Maori were killed in the war. they all fought back for their land. A few days passed and there were barely any Maori people; they became tired but wouldn’t stop fighting for their land. The British people left New Zealand back to their land. The north land invited maori to a hui at waitangi and presented them with te tiriti o waitangi hobson told the chiefs to sign te tiriti because mor pakeha would soon arrive but some maori chiefs thought the treaty was bad for them and told everyone not to sign it but two chiefs – hone heke pokai and tamati waka nene- believed a treaty would stop wars between tribes.

it would also make trade between maori

and pakeha the next morning, on the 6th of february 1840, some chiefs were ready to sign a hui was called for later that day. Williams read Te tiriti aloud a final time, and over 40 chiefs signed it. Some chose not to. Many chiefs were not there to sign it so Hobson had made many copies around the country to be signed over the next seven months, more than five hundred chiefs signed their name or mark almost all of them on the te reo maori version. By then there were lots of houses around new zealand in the twentieth century te tiriti’s promise has been broken over time people have begun to acknowledge this james carroll, the native minister said that it was time to help those maori who had lost land because of the crown’s actions.
